The rise of populism in contemporary democracies has sparked significant debate regarding its effects on political institutions and democratic governance. This comparative study examines the role of populist movements in shaping political landscapes, particularly focusing on how populist rhetoric and leadership styles challenge traditional democratic structures. Using case studies from various global contexts, including Europe and Latin America, this study explores how populism influences political institutions such as the judiciary, legislative bodies, and political parties. The paper highlights both the destabilizing and reinvigorating aspects of populism, offering insights into the complex relationship between populism and democratic resilience. By evaluating the long-term consequences of populism, this study argues that while populism can serve as a response to widespread disenchantment with elite politics, it can also undermine democratic values, often threatening the independence of key political institutions.
